[SARDINIA]

Sardinia is a magical, rugged island off the western coast of mainland Italy, where wild landscapes meet impossibly clear water. Just a short flight from Bologna, Milan, or Rome, it’s long been a local favorite, but with growing buzz around the island, knowing where to go makes all the difference. In Northern Sardinia, particularly along the Costa Smeralda, you’ll find crystalline beaches, understated luxury, rustic Italian cooking, and pockets of authenticity if you know where to look.

This stretch of coastline is known for its glamorous reputation, but beyond the luxury shopping and beach clubs lies a more nuanced experience rooted in Sardinian tradition, seasonal cuisine, and landscapes that feel almost untouched.

The Hit List

Sardinia is known for a specific set of traditions and ingredients. Look for these on menus, set up tastings, or ask a local about them: Vermentino, the crisp coastal white; porceddu, the traditional roast suckling baby pig; Pecorino Sardo, the island’s signature sheep’s-milk cheese; and cork, which is one of Sardinia’s most important crafts and exports. You’ll also hear about mirto, fregula, malloreddus, carasau bread, bottarga, and age-old weaving, along with the island’s deep pastoral culture and festival traditions.
